On 17th August 2018, at the Nepal Art Council, Babar Mahal, Kathmandu, a jazz concert by FOMOFO music group, constituting Polish and Nepalese artists, was organized. The musical event was part of the exhibition ‘Visual Language of Lech Majewski. Polish Art Posters’, organized by the Polish Institute, New Delhi between 17th and 30th August 2018. The group’s musical renditions and improvisations delighted the audience present at the exhibition.
FOMOFO is talented young Jazz music group. Artists Abhisek Bhadra was playing Keys, Jacek Chmiel was on Electric Guitar, Kiran Shahi on Drums, and Bijent Bikram Shah played Bass Guitar.
About the artists:
Born in Kathmandu, Abhisek Bhadra started his musical career in the local jazz and rock scene. He won the ‘Rockheads competition’ and ‘Jazzmandu Jazz for the next generation competition’ in 2005 and also bagged ‘The most outstanding musician Award’ in the latter competition in 2010. During these years Abhisek composed/arranged and played piano and keyboards for local bands. In 2012 he moved to Rotterdam, Netherlands to pursue a Bachelor in Jazz Composition/Arranging in Codarts, Rotterdam Conservatorium. He has composed, arranged and tried his hands on electronics music by venturing into diverse fields such as contemporary electro-acoustic music, as well as mainstream hip-hop. He is the Academic Director at the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory and also teaches Piano, Theory, Arranging and Composition. He is currently an active performing and composing musician in the Kathmandu music scene collaborating with bands like Jindabaad, Fomofo, Maria Fajardo-Abhisek Bhadra duo and Le Pirro.
He started to play the guitar in 2002, inspired by progressive rock and metal music. After a few years he switched to jazz, contemporary and experimental music, both as a performer and as a composer. He graduated with honors Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello in Venice, Italy, where he developed his interests about experimental music and free improvisation. He has performed in various countries viz. Poland, Italy, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Germany, and Nepal.
He is a professional drummer and music specialist based in Kathmandu with more than eight years of experience. He is an active member of the music scene within Nepal, and currently plays and records with successful Nepali band Jindabaad. He has also worked as a session drummer for international artists such as Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal. From these experiences, he has had the opportunities to further develop his career and perform in a variety of music festivals including: Silence Festival, Jazzmandu, and South Asian Band Festival.
Bijent Bikram Shah
He is a Kathmandu based bass player, who started playing bass in 2006. He is currently involved with Binaash (fun death metal band), joint family internationale (reggae band) and he loves playing variety of genres including jazz, pop, rnb, and rock. Bijent has recorded and performed with several artists: Joint Family Internationale , Binaash, urjazz , Kiran Nepali, Ashesh Rai, Le Pirro, Rohit John Chettri, Ranzen Jha, Herbal People, Sunny Tuladhar, Juan Ortiz, Kiran Shahi, Naramurti, Ashish Sinha, Ranier Puch, Charlotte Jacobs, Maria Fajardo Martin, Max o Hara, KJC Nepal army big band, Abishek Bhadra, and Matteo Fraboni.
